Yorktown Victory CenterSome of the best known activities in Williamsburg are the historical attractions. Colonial Williamsburg is the most well-known sites, but the area is full of other historical attractions to visit during your vacation.

Jamestown Settlement

Visit a replica of where it all began: Jamestown. One of the original settlements in the new land, Jamestown was one of the first to survive. This recreation includes James Fort and replicas of the three ships that brought settlers to Virginia from England. Throughout the settlement, you will find townspeople acting out how daily life went on in the 1600s. Various interactive exhibits are scattered throughout the settlement, including stations where you can learn how to make rope or other items from the 17th century. This attraction includes on-site dining options and a gift shop. From now until October 15, 2009, visitors can see the special exhibit on Jamestown and Bermuda in honor of Bermuda’s 400th anniversary.

Yorktown Victory Center

For a look at Virginia’s role in America’s path toward freedom, visit this historic site. Yorktown contains a living museum, complete with a replication of an army encampment. The center features interactive exhibits, video presentations, and galleries. Visitors can also catch live reenactments and demonstrations. A special exhibit at the center right now is the “Legacy of Yorktown: Virginia Beckons.” This exhibit looks at the development of the area and pays tribute to the various cultures and people groups that played roles in building Virginia. Combination tickets are available for the Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Victory Center.

Colonial Williamsburg

The predecessor of modern-day Williamsburg, this village will take you back to the 18th century. The village is a full-scale replica of a colonial town, complete with homes, a courthouse, shops, and many historical sites. Buildings on site include the Great Hopes Plantation and a Historic Area including the Courthouse, the Gaol, and the homes of Peyton Randolph and George Wythe. Activities in Colonial Williamsburg include a shuttle service, orientation walk, the short film “Williamsburg: The Story of a Patriot.” These activities are included in the Colonial Sampler ticket. Additional activities, including Revolutionary City, Governer’s Palace, DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, and Basset Hall, are available with the Governer’s Key 2-day Pass. A 1-year Freedom Pass is also available.
